In 1858 and while still a small boy, Thomas Henry Wellings and his parents endured the long voyage by sea from his home in Manchester, England to the shores of his new home in Australia.
As a young teacher, Thomas Henry was appointed to the south coast of NSW, where he first discovered the coastal township of Eden. It was to be the beginning of a long and precious relationship with a community that the Wellings family have come to dearly love.
This is Thomas Henry’s story and that of his family who later followed him to Eden. It also tells of his sons, our first generation born in Australia. Some went on to work and build families in other locations across NSW, but all shared Thomas Henry’s great affection for this early Australian settlement.
This is the story of the founding generations of the Wellings family and of their defining connection with Eden, NSW.
This 90 page book, which includes many family photos and images of early Eden, is available for sale online. See details below.
This publication is a brief history of the Wellings family in Eden as contributed by their descendants and friends, and compiled by John Wellings.
Unfortunately, John passed away on 13th September 2006 at Rydal NSW after a short illness. Therefore John did not see the publication of this “little book”, as he envisaged it might be.
To say that John was passionate about researching his family is simply to repeat what has often been said of his approach to life in general. In an obituary published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 27th November 2006, John’s long-term friend and colleague, Malcolm Longstaff, stated that “while most educators are committed to imparting knowledge, there are some who attach equal importance to acquiring knowledge themselves. John Wellings ... was one of them”. That acquisitive nature is reflected in the story related in this book.
John’s final wish was that his ashes be taken to Eden, which none could deny to be entirely appropriate.
Of those who contributed information and assistance in collating this family saga and who encouraged John Wellings in its writing, the following people are gratefully acknowledged: Effie Corbett, Robyn Higham, Anne Krone, Lynette Lyon, Mary Mitchell (died April 22, 2006 aged 91), Charles Wellings, Geoff Wellings and Peter Wellings.
